What Breaks First When Your Volume Doubles

Last Tuesday, 120 people gathered at Fort Voordorp to answer one question: what breaks first when your volume doubles?

If you’re scaling a high-volume digital business, you already know the answer isn’t theoretical. It’s happening in your systems right now.

Eight speakers who didn’t hedge

Ronald Kemmeren showed what CFO AI strategy looks like when it’s real. Not the investor pitch. The hard call: how to use AI to strengthen control, not weaken it.

Jeffrey van den Berg walked teams through the ERP breaking point. When do your systems genuinely can’t handle your volume? What does a real high-volume implementation actually look like? The answer isn’t “bigger servers.”

Bram van Kessel and Sven Liefting mapped what a mature order-to-cash process looks like when you’re transaction-heavy. Not the textbook version. The version that actually scales.

Jennifer Kuiper and André Kwakernaat posed the question everyone avoids: everyone’s on AI, but do they know what they’re doing? They walked through the practical risks, the actual governance, the control questions, and the legal requirements. Not training that makes people feel better. Literacy that changes how they decide.

The panel was exactly what we needed

Patrick, Marinda, and Uwe sat on a bench with no script. Ambitiousness, honesty, practical grit. No one was selling anything. Everyone was thinking out loud.

Marinda’s Swiss tunnel metaphor stuck: you can build and adapt the tracks while the train is already moving. You don’t have to stop to scale.

Patrick made a single point clear: the financial report is just another view of the data, not the goal itself. This shifts everything about how you build systems.

Uwe shared the same paradox from another angle: you have to take a big bite at some point. Incremental doesn’t work at scale.

The payoff

Arturo Arpón showed what happens when you actually look at your data: €500K+ in hidden supplier overcharges, found in one year, in one company’s own data. That’s Truth Inside.

Peter Lem launched the new Actuals. It’s built around a single obsession: can you trust the data? Before any report. Before any decision. That’s where everything starts.

What’s next

We’re building on last week’s takeaways. A roundtable is coming mid-November. The question: when you’re scaling, do you buy or build your finance infrastructure? The real answer, we suspect, is both. And the complications that come with that choice.

Finance Unlocked turned out to be more than a conference. It was a gathering of people who are actually scaling. Who are actually facing the hard part of growth. And who are honest about what breaks.

You built the day with us. We’re building the next one for you.
