Snowflake & PyData meetup, Amsterdam

A big thank you to Snowflake and PyData Amsterdam for hosting such an inspiring and well-organized meetup at the Snowflake Amsterdam office! It was fantastic to connect with fellow data professionals and share insights on the impact of modern data platforms.
We had the opportunity to present our journey of migrating a transaction reconciliation platform from a MySQL-based data warehouse to Snowflake.
I walked the audience through our approach: a gradual, tenant-by-tenant migration that allowed us to maintain existing functionality while leveraging Snowflake’s advanced features. The result? Faster processing, reduced maintenance costs, and greater user satisfaction—a testament to how the right technology and careful planning can drive powerful results.
3 key insights we shared:
- Evolution before revolution: Plan for transformative change but take it one step at a time. Make small adjustments, validate, and modify. Ask, “What’s the smallest change I can make that adds value?”
- Proven technology over exiting technology: Proven solutions often bring better compatibility, support, and reliability.
- Self-sufficiency’s reward: We knew performance was critical in achieving self-sufficiency but still underestimated its importance. The benefits of self-sufficiency are immense—no context switching, no waiting on others, and complete control over timelines.
We also found the presentation by Booking.com’s team (İpek Özlem & Dimitar Nedev) incredibly insightful! Their journey to build a modern, cloud-based data platform highlighted practical strategies for prioritizing user experience and developer productivity.
Thanks once again to the Snowflake and PyData Amsterdam teams for an excellent event.
We’re already looking forward to the next one!
